The world map renderer is slowly getting somewhere … at least I think it is.
I spent quite a while getting the terrain transitions to look less static. They now have some randomness instead of repeating the same clean edges everywhere. I’m pretty happy with the sand and all the small details. It’s starting to feel more like an actual place and less like a grid.
The water is still bothering me. I really like how the shallow water looks, but the medium water is much too empty and boring. Then the deep water suddenly looks like the open sea. The transitions between them aren’t working as well as I’d like yet … and I still need to figure out how to improve them.
The cliffs are a similar story. I tried a lot of different things, and the current version is at least acceptable. It used to look much worse … honestly, the first attempts were terrible, and I’m not going to show screenshots of those.
Still, the cliffs now feel a little generic. I’m not sure whether I should spend much more time trying to fix the cliff textures themselves, or take the smarter route and hide the weaker parts with more details like rocks, minerals, vegetation, and other things built into the terrain.
It’s definitely not finished, but this is the first version that feels presentable enough to share.
What do you think … should I keep working on the water and cliffs, or focus on adding more details to the world?
